Match Report for Potten End v Dunstable III on 27/09/09

Cliffhanger to end the season

This was the third meeting between these sides in the last few weeks, and Potten end were seeking revenge for defeats in the previous two encounters. This time we were not in the sumptuous surroundings of Dunstable Downs, but in sunny Potten End with red kites replacing gliders as the in-flight entertainment.
The Krakken won the toss and elected to bat and, not for the first time this season, Jimmy P (32) and Del Boy (27) got us off to a solid start with an opening partnership worth 42. Jimmy was then joined by Pete Raeburn who put yesterdays golden duck behind him with a well struck 43 as they added 56 for the 2nd wicket. No game would be complete without at least a mini collapse, and this was no different as 4 wickets went down for only three runs and at 123-6 with 14 overs to go things were not looking too promising. However some fine late order batting from Adam Hyland and David Raeburn with 28 apiece, including the chairman hitting some off the square:), enabled us to post a competitive total of 205-8 from 35 overs.
In reply Dunstable lost 3 very early wickets and with a succession of batsmen making decent scores (5 of them between 28 and 35) they were always in contention and it became more a case of which team could hold their nerve to claim victory. The turning point may have been a great one-handed diving catch behid the wicket by Derek Gower to dismiss the dangerous looking Watts. Some excellent 'death' bowling from Michael Gurney and Colin Territ (it may have only been 1 over, but included a crucial wicket and only went for 6 runs) eventually saw the game reach the final ball with all 3 results still possible as only 2 runs were needed. So, two to win and one to tie.... yes, no, wait, s***, sorry - it's a run out and victory for the home team by the smallest possible margin.
A great finish to a keenly contested game - it's a shame that we'll now have to wait till next April for another one!
